COMMENTS on Wednesday 14 May 2008

In the Individual Billiards Championship, Rob Armitage won his second title denying Tony Clegg his ninth. In a one sided match, Rob raced to the mid-session break at 250 points with the help of two runs of 55. Tony reached just 90 and even that would have been worse had Tony not had a mini surge helped by a 32 break just before the interval. The second session was really a case of Tony trying unsuccessfully to reduce the deficit but he was strangely out of sorts and Rob maintained the difference to the finish without producing the explosive form of the first session. A 33 break was his highest as he ran out the winner 500-326. OK, Rob had a fair amount of luck (Tony would say more than that) but his style of power play is going to result in an occasional lucky cannon, in-off or pot. The point is, he capitalised well on the good fortune which, of course, makes it harder to bear.

Whilst we are on about Billiards, it is with regret that we announce the passing of one of the stalwarts of our Association, Jack Broadbent, latterly of Lindley Liberal Club. Jack was an accomplished player at both disciplines but concentrated on Billiards and represented Huddersfield up to last season. Our sincere condolences go to his family and friends.

The Sandy Fraser Trophy for the best results over the last six matches in the Open Snooker League has been won by St Patricks CC B team after a three way play-off involving Crosland Moor Con B and Golcar RBL D.

Patrick Joyce and Mohammed Naeem of Lindley WMC beat Tony Clegg and Robert Armitage of Springwood BC 3-1 in the Leonard Oldham Pairs.
In the first frame a fluked red, when he was on 12, helped Naeem to extend the break to a well compiled frame winning 73; this being the only break of the match. In the second frame Naeem was again the top scorer, but unfortunately for him it was for the wrong pair! Two well laid snookers by Tony Clegg resulted in 'foul and a miss' being called four times and five times respectively. It is a cruel rule at this level of the game, with due respect to the players. The third frame saw the rule being used to the detriment of Clegg and Armitage who lost a closely fought frame when Naeem potted a superb long blue down the cushion to leave an easy pink to clinch the frame. Paddy Joyce who had given solid support to Naeem throughout had his reward in the fourth frame when potting the pink to ensure victory.

Robert Read retains his Snooker Championship title

In a close fought match Robert Read became Huddersfield Snooker Champion when he defeated Rob Armitage at Newsome WMC by 4 frames to 3.
Up until 7pm it looked doubtful if the match would be able to take place due to a power failure in the Newsome area.
However, in the event, it was able to start approx. 15 minutes late.
Robert Read took the first frame 80-14 with two runs of 30 and 21; helped by Rob Armitage who inadvertently went in-off a couple of times. He then went 2 frames ahead by taking the second 67-30 with the help of a break of 32..
The third frame saw Rob Armitage take the lead with a break of 36 giving him an advantage of 37-1. However Robert Read took command with a magnificent break of 67 to win the frame by 68-37. It appeared that needing only one frame for the title he could look forward to an early night - but Rob Armitage had different ideas !! In the fourth it looked like the 'writing was on the wall' with Rob Armitage trailing 50 points to 30 with only the colours left but he clinched the frame taking them all to win 57-50. He then took control of the fifth frame to win 56-16 after Robert Read conceeded trailing by 40 points with only the colours left. The sixth frame saw Rob Armitage take total control with an early break of 38 to lead 43-0. This was then followed by a superb run of 54 with Robert Read once again conceeding the frame 97-0
With the match now level at 3 frames each the stage was set for for an exciting finish. Robert Read took the initiative with a break of 48 ( 6 reds and 6 blacks ). He then stormed to the title with a further run of 47 to clinch the frame 95-11 and retain his title.

In the Billiards Handicap, Paul Shaw of Meltham Lib beat Jack Dyson of Brockholes BC by just two points in the 200 up match. Victory also for the handicapping committee I think!

In the 3 Player Knockout, Golcar Con B beat Lower Hopton A 2-1; the final frame going to the pink ball.

Dave Kirrane of Paddock C & BC became the new Junior Snooker Champion on Sunday 27 April at Top Spot when he defeated Mark Atkinson of Crosland Moor Con. in the Final by 2 Frames to Nil. Either player could have become Champion in a close match which saw both Frames ending on the Black!!! In the first Semi-final Jack Dyson of Brockholes had an excellent chance to reach the final when he took the first frame from Mark Atkinson and then missed a fairly simple Black in the decider, before Mark Atkinson clinched his place in the Final. In the other Semi-Final Dave Kirrane beat Alex Hirst of Hillhouse and Birkby by 2 Frames to Nil.
